Georgia State Representative Floyd L. Griffin Jr. has led an extraordinary life, marked by diverse roles and significant accomplishments. As a former Vietnam helicopter pilot, Army Colonel, professor, businessman, Georgia State Senator, Mayor of Milledgeville, GA, and author, he has consistently demonstrated leadership and dedication to his community and country.

Recently, Representative Griffin extended his commitment to service by visiting the King Danforth Unit. During his visit, he made a generous monetary donation aimed at supporting the unit’s operations. This contribution will have a direct impact on the youth of our club, enhancing their experiences and opportunities for growth.

Discovering the Mysteries of Strawberry DNA 🍓🔬

Did you know that strawberries have DNA just like humans? This fascinating fact was the centerpiece of an exciting STEM activity held at our club, thanks to the visit from @howardhshuskies
seniors, Tabias and Aniyah.

These talented students took on the role of instructors for the experiment, guiding our club kids through a hands-on lesson that transformed them into little scientists.👩🏾‍🔬 🧑‍🔬👨🏾‍🔬

Tabias and Aniyah introduced the club kids to the concept of DNA, explaining its significance in both plants and animals. The young scientists were then given the opportunity to conduct a DNA extraction from strawberries, a process that allowed them to witness the strands of DNA firsthand.

Preparation:
Club kids learned how to mash strawberries to break down the cell walls.
Extraction Solution:
They used a mixture of dish soap, salt, and water to release the DNA from the strawberry cells.
Filtration:
The mixture was filtered to separate the solid bits from the liquid containing the DNA.
Precipitation:
By slowly adding cold alcohol to the solution, the DNA precipitated out, forming visible strands.

The activity was not only educational but also incredibly engaging, sparking curiosity and excitement among the club kids. They were amazed to see the DNA materialize before their eyes, gaining a better understanding of how it connects all living things, from strawberries to humans.

This hands-on experience reinforced key scientific concepts and illustrated the importance of STEM education. It provided the club kids with a tangible understanding of DNA, fostering a love for science and discovery.

A huge thank you to Tabias and Aniyah for sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm and inspiring the next generation of scientists. We are proud to offer these enriching educational opportunities that encourage learning and exploration.

We are deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of a beloved staff member, Mrs. Donna Cobb. Her remarkable dedication and unwavering commitment to nurturing young minds through meals have left an indelible mark on our organization.

Mrs. Cobb shared a beautiful life with her husband of 40 years, Travis Cobb. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, April Harshner and Magan Recendiz, who carry forward her legacy of kindness and compassion. Her family was her pride and joy, and her love extended to her four cherished grandchildren.

Donna’s journey with the Boys & Girls Clubs began with the opening of our Candler County Unit in September 2013. For 12 years, she was a constant source of inspiration and support to both staff and club members. Her presence was not only felt at the Club but also in the school cafeteria, where she dedicated 19 years of service, nourishing both bodies and spirits.

Her passion for community and nutrition was evident in everything she did. Mrs. Cobb’s warm smile and generous heart will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will continue to inspire us all.

She will forever be in our hearts.

Volunteers Needed!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Georgia is looking for volunteers for our upcoming Great Ocmulgee River Duck Race!

We’re looking for volunteers to help set up, check in, help at our activity stations, clean up, and most importantly wrangle ducks. Duck wranglers are needed in and out of the water and must have their own canoes, kayaks, or boats.
