The Mercer University Upward Bound Program is designed to assist students with academic potential who need additional academic support and motivation to succeed in high school and later in college. They provide an on-going program of academic and counseling activities. Students may participate in the program from the time they are enrolled until they graduate from high school.

Funded by the Department of Education, the program has been on the Mercer campus since 1966. Since that time, the program has provided service to hundreds of students who have graduated or are currently attending post-secondary institutions all over the country.

During the academic year , a supportive instructional program in the areas of general and advanced Math, English, Science, SAT Verbal/Math, Social Studies and Foreign Language is offered weekly and during monthly Saturday sessions. Tutorial assistance in these academic subjects is provided to aid the students in meeting the demands of their high school courses.

A six-week summer residential program is also offered. This component of the program is designed to simulate a college-going experience, focusing on academic as well as cultural enrichment. Its instructional program allows for students to take academic courses in the areas mentioned above.

Upward Bound, via its counseling program, assists students with goal-setting, decision-making, postsecondary planning, career development, and standardized testing so that a college education can become a reality.

Eligibility to participate in the program is determined individually. However, each applicant must meet basic eligibility requirements that call for neither parent to have a four-year college degree, and the family income level to be verified. Additionally, students need to complete an application that requires them to write an essay, seek letters of recommendation, and submit academic records showing the potential for college.

The Mercer University Upward Bound Program is committed to assisting students achieve their secondary and post-secondary aspirations.
